Does medicine, social work, or psychology provide its trainees with superior credentials to decide the moral worth of an individual's thought and behavior? (2) There can be no agreement as to what constitutes mental illness. The number of diagnostic categories grows exponentially, as anyone may declare any behavior considered unwanted to be a new mental illness. (3) There can be no agreement as to what constitutes treatment. There are, at last count, hundreds of competing therapies. New treatments are being added continuously.

Judging and Describing The processes of moral judgment are as universal as attempts to describe, explain, predict, and control. Actions have consequence. Things happen to us. Sometimes the things that happen to us are the consequences of the actions of others. Often, our actions are the cause of the things that happen to others. The events that happen to us and the actions that produce consequences are experienced not merely cognitively, but affectively as well. In the next chapter, I will argue that the meaning of an event is never merely perceptual or intellectual, but is emotionally felt as well.

However consensually validated by the description of what a person does, no matter how we determine the facts of behavior—once a judgment is made, we are in the realm of moral philosophy and not descriptive psychological science. For example, a man shoots and kills a dozen people in the act of committing a bank robbery. No matter how we agree that he and his actions are wrongful and bad, the badness is merely our opinion and is accepted on faith of our authority to utter the claim. The claims of moral authority can be accepted no other way except on the faith that the authority is justified in making the judgment.
