Therefore, instead of relocating the therapist’s body reaction back into the client, I would like to suggest that these bodily experiences are brought out into the open and allowed to become part of the therapeutic encounter. There is a danger within the therapeutic community of viewing such phenomena as merely aspects of countertransference. I would suggest that this is a ruse akin to the medical trick of locating doctors’ physical responses back into the body of the patient. I hope to demonstrate throughout this book that the somatic phenomena felt by therapists are important features of the therapeutic relationship, but are, and can only ever be, the therapist’s responses.
However, the argument is again ‘client body orientated’. It is also debatable whether Boadella actually addresses the issue of embodiment at all. It is almost as if the term ‘non-verbal communication’ has been substituted for embodiment and, as a consequence, it is unclear from his argument what he means by embodiment. Very few authors directly address the therapist’s bodily response. Nathan Field (1989) explores some of his somatic phenomena in a very open account of his practice experience. He puts forward a tentative hypothesis for the appearance of such phenomena which he terms ‘embodied countertransference’.
A study conducted by Fagan and Silverthorn (1998:72) concluded that: ‘On the basis of this series of studies, we can say that the ability to understand emotional communication from others as communicated by touch is an important component of mental health’. Thus touch can be a powerful technique to employ within the psychotherapeutic setting. Its use is certainly not new, and there are many authors who advocate a deeper engagement with touch in therapy (Reich 1983, 1990; McNeely 1987; Randell 1989; Frankl 1990; Kepner 1993).
